1. The principle of silk fabric shrinkage
Silk fabrics may shrink, which is mainly related to their fiber structure. Silk is composed of protein fibers, which will expand to a certain extent when exposed to water. When silk fabrics are washed or affected by a humid environment, the structure between the fibers will change. On the one hand, the expansion of the fibers will reduce the gaps inside the fabric; on the other hand, if it is subjected to mechanical forces during the washing process, such as stirring, wringing, etc., it will cause the fibers to be arranged more closely, resulting in a smaller overall size of the fabric, that is, shrinkage.
2. Factors affecting the shrinkage of silk fabrics
Silk types: Different types of silk have different fiber thickness, density, and weaving methods. For example, mulberry silk is relatively delicate, while tussah silk may be thicker. Generally speaking, the finer the fiber and the tighter the weaving, the less likely the silk fabric will shrink when affected by external factors, but this is not absolute.
Washing method:
Water temperature: If you use too high a water temperature to wash silk fabrics, it will accelerate the expansion of the fibers and increase the risk of shrinkage. It is generally recommended to use cold water or warm water not exceeding 30℃ for washing.
Detergent: Strong alkaline detergents may damage the protein fibers of silk, thereby affecting its structural stability and causing shrinkage. Neutral detergents specifically for silk should be selected.
Mechanical force: As mentioned earlier, excessive stirring, rubbing or wringing will damage the fiber structure of silk fabrics and cause shrinkage. When washing silk, it is best to use a gentle hand wash method and avoid using the strong washing mode of the washing machine.
Drying method: If the wet silk fabric is hung directly to dry, during the evaporation of water, due to the effect of gravity, the fabric may be stretched and deformed, thus affecting its size. A more appropriate method is to spread the silk flat in a well-ventilated place to dry.
3. How to prevent silk fabrics from shrinking
Follow the correct washing instructions: When purchasing silk products, carefully read the washing and care instructions on the product label and operate as required.
Pretreatment: Before washing silk fabrics for the first time, you can soak them in cold water and add a small amount of silk-specific detergent. The soaking time should not be too long, about 5-10 minutes. This allows the fabric to adapt to moisture in advance and reduce the risk of shrinkage during subsequent washing.
Professional care: For some more expensive or special silk products, you can also choose to send them to a professional dry cleaner for cleaning and care. Professionals can use appropriate methods to prevent silk from shrinking.
