What is Digital Printing Fabrics

Digital printing fabrics refer to fabrics that have been printed using digital textile printing technology. This process involves printing high-resolution images directly onto fabrics using specialized inkjet printers. The printer delivers ink droplets onto the fabric surface, creating the desired design. Digital printing technology allows for high-quality, detailed designs and faster turnaround times compared to traditional methods of textile printing. It is ideal for small to medium-sized print runs, for printing complex and detailed patterns, and for customizing fabrics with unique designs. Digital printing fabrics are used in a variety of applications, including apparel, home décor, and signage.

What fabrics can you digital print on?

We can print on cotton, polyester, rayon, silk, linen, nylon, wool, etc., as well as blends with a maximum width of "60". There are however various reasons why any specific fabric may not perform well on our printer.

Basic Characteristics of Digital Printing Fabrics

1. There is no need to spend expensive plate making costs. You only need to transfer your favorite pattern to the thermal transfer printing master. After a little processing by the printing master, the printing paper can be produced for transfer printing.

2. Since there is no need for plate making, digital printing fabrics eliminate some unnecessary processes, and the sample production speed is accelerated. Generally, samples can be produced in 2-3 days.

3. The number of colors is unlimited, and the patterns and colors of digital printing fabrics are fuller and more delicate.

4. The materials used in digital printing fabrics are environmentally friendly and pollution-free, which can completely eliminate the worries caused by environmentally unqualified products.

5. The color fastness is excellent. As long as your fabric is mainly made of polyester, the color fastness to light and washing can reach level 4 or above.

6. Digital printing fabrics are soft to the touch and have good breathability.

Component Classification of Digital Printing Fabrics

1. Cotton: Digital printing fabrics are mainly cotton, but reactive dye inks can also be used in linen, silk, etc.;

01.Cotton fabric

Cotton is the most commonly used natural fabric for printing. No matter it’s for fashion or just personal use, it’s always a priority. Thanks to the natural fibre feature, cotton has a high moisture control, comfort, durability and breathability. We are using reactive inks, which could be better absorbed by cotton fibre for digital printed cotton. At the same time reactive inks could provide a stronger color fastness and penetration.

02.Linen/Ramie fabric

Linen/Ramie is also one of the natural fibre and we call it a natural air conditioner.Due to the special feature and breathability ,it’s your first choice in summer. In the past, we were only able to choose solid

03.Mixed/blended fabric

Mixed/blended fabric means one fabric that’s made up of at least two different yarns. It could be poly/cotton, viscose/cotton, silk/cotton, viscose/poly, etc. Or three different compositions like poly/cotton/viscose, polyamide/poly/spandex, etc. It could be a challenge for printers, as we can only use one certain ink for digital printing on a specific fabric. Don’t be panic, still many of them are good for digital printing. No matter how many materials are mixed together, there’s a game rule that all digital printers will follow. We will explain more about it in other articles.

04.Wool and Silk

Both wool and silk are luxury fabrics and deserve to be applied with the best digital printing technologies on textiles. Reactive inks and acid ink will work on both fabrics, if you are looking forward to a better color fastness we shall go for the reactive. If for color vibrancy, go for the acid inks.

05.Viscose/tencel/modal/rayon/lyocell

You might have heard about these fabrics and actually they all belong to the man-made fabric category. Each fabric represents a different feature. And they are widely applied in the fashion industry, high street fashion like H&M, Zara. You can find a lot of blouses, pants and shorts made up of viscose in their stores. As is the case we apply digital print on cotton, we use reactive inks as well to print on man-made fabrics.

06.Polyamide fabric

Polyamide fabric is a general term that is used to refer to a variety of different fabrics that are made from strings of polyamide monomers. The most famous form of polyamide fabric is nylon.

FAQ

Q: Can you digital printing fabrics on any fabric?

A: Digital printing fabrics are divided into 3 types: Plant-based, animal-based or synthetic based. You would use acid dyes to print on silk, wool and nylon fabrics (animal-based), reactive dyes to print on silk, wool, linen, cotton or rayon (plant and animal-based) and disperse dyes (synthetic based) to print on polyester.

Q: How do you care for digital printing fabrics?

A: We recommend: Machine wash cool or warm, delicate or gentle cycle, tumble dry low, remove promptly. Best to iron the reverse side.

Q: Which fabric is suitable for digital printing fabrics?

A: Cotton is a natural fiber that is especially used for clothing within the fashion industry, mainly because of its high moisture control, comfort, and durability. With a digital textile printing machine, you can print on cotton.

Q: What is the process of digital printing fabrics?

A: The first step in digital printing fabrics is to pretreat the fabric with liquid solutions that prepare it to accept the dye and better absorb the color. Then it is fed through the printer, which sprays the dye onto the textile with tiny droplets.

Q: How many types of digital printing fabrics?

A: The most frequently used fabric printing methods nowadays are screen printing, inkjet printing, and dye sublimation.

Q: Is digital printing fabrics direct to garment?

A: For dtg printing, digital printers are used to spray water-based ink onto fabric. A pre-treatment solution is first applied to help the ink bond with the fabric. Next, the garment is mounted on a platen and placed into the printer, where the print is ready in just a couple of minutes.

Q: How many washes does digital printing fabrics last?

A: Dtg prints can still survive 50+ washes and be acceptable to the customer – certainly “good enough” for most customers! The bottom line about quality: Dtg prints are typically made for customers that have different demands than customers that place high-volume screen print orders.

Q: How long does digital printing fabrics last on clothes?

A: T-shirts that are printed with white ink or if white ink is used as an under base, need a little more care with the washing cycle. T-shirts printed with white ink should last up to 20-30 washes before showing any visible signs of fading. This can be extended with care during the washing, by using a gentle wash cycle.

Q: Does digital printing fabrics last?

A: Durability - digital prints can deteriorate as you wash your clothes, especially if you are washing with hot water. While screen printing does not have this problem, if done correctly, your print will retain its color and vibrancy for a long time.

Q: What are the pros and cons of digital printing fabrics?

A: It also allows for unlimited color choices, customization, and flexibility in design and production. However, digital printing also has some disadvantages, such as high ink costs, low print speed, low washability, and compatibility issues with some fabrics and inks.

Q: Can you wash digital printing fabrics?

A: Once completed, your fabric can be either washed or dry cleaned but, as with any printed fabric, fading may occur so we recommend that you undertake sampling if you have specific requirements.

Q: What materials are needed for digital printing fabrics?

A: Cotton is one of the most widely used materials for digital printing because of its comfort, moisture resistance, and popularity within the consumer market. Some of the other typical materials that are good for digital printing are canvas, fabric, polyester, paper, and card stock.

Q: What dye is used in digital printing fabrics?

A: The dyes which are commonly used for digital textile inks are as follows: Acid dye inks, reactive dye inks and disperse dye inks.

Q: What is pretreatment of cotton fabric for digital printing fabrics?

A: Unlike in conventional printing, cotton fabrics need to be pretreated in ink-jet printing with a pretreatment formulation containing a thickener, alkali, and urea, and then dried to remove water prior to ink-jet printing.

Q: What are the techniques of digital printing fabrics?

A: The most popular methods include inkjet and laser printers, which deposit pigment and toner, respectively, onto substrates, such as paper, canvas, glass, metal, and marble.

Q: Can you digitally print on linen?

A: It is not expensive to use the digital process for linen print. The price tags for this process stay the same, no matter how many colours you use. Great quality with excellent accuracy and sharp reproduction. A sustainable method of reproduction – you make just what you need.

Q: Is digital fabric printing better than screen printing?

A: If you want to print on lots of different types of fabric, screenprinting is your best bet.
If you need a small number of prints, digital printing is the way to go because there is often a lower minimum order requirement.
If you want a professional, high-quality print, digital printing is the best option.

Q: How digital printing fabrics are a more sustainable design practice?

A: Digital printing contributes significantly to sustainability by minimizing waste, conserving resources, and enabling eco-friendly practices such as on-demand production and the use of environmentally conscious inks. Digital printing fabrics aligns perfectly with the eco-conscious mindset of today's consumers.

Q: What is the difference between sublimation and digital printing on fabric?

A: The difference between dye sublimation and digital printing is that digital prints are printed on the surface of the material, whereas dye sublimation is infused into the material. What this means is that a dye sublimation print cannot be superficially damaged. There is no material to chip, peel or scratch.
